CSSPS data reveals six-year high in automated school matching, with fewer than one in ten qualified candidates now relying on the manual fallback route
More BECE candidates than ever are being matched automatically to senior high schools, with new CSSPS figures showing the 2026 automatic placement rate has climbed to 87.32% — the highest since at least 2021.
Out of 604,567 qualified candidates this year, 527,932 secured places through the automated system, a significant jump from the 81.96% recorded in 2025 and far above the 66.23% seen in 2021, when the data series began.
The numbers point to a consistent strengthening of the placement algorithm over six cycles, with the share of candidates left to find schools on their own falling from roughly a third to under a tenth.
Self-Placement Registrations Plummet
Just 53,887 candidates — 8.91% of those qualified — had signed up for self-placement as of Thursday, 10th September. That is a steep drop from 2021, when 187,542 candidates (33.77%) needed the manual route.
However, the 2026 self-placement window was still open at the time of the count and extended into Friday, 11th September, meaning the final tally is expected to rise slightly before the cycle closes.
The Six-Year Trend
A closer look at the data shows the automatic placement rate surged between 2022 and 2023, leaping from 69.24% to 81.56%. It then held steady in the 81–82% band for three years before climbing again to this year’s 87.32%.
Meanwhile, BECE registration numbers have moved only modestly over the same period — from 571,892 in 2021 to 623,072 in 2026 — indicating that the improving placement rates reflect real process gains rather than a shrinking applicant pool.

Why It Matters
Self-placement has long been the fallback for candidates who miss out on all their selected schools, requiring them to apply directly for leftover slots after the main round. Its steady decline suggests the CSSPS algorithm is getting better at matching students to schools of their choice without manual intervention.
A smaller self-placement pool also means fewer families enduring the more uncertain and often stressful process of securing a place outside the automated system — and potentially less last-minute crowding at placement centres after results are released.

The 2026 results cap a six-year period in which automatic placement has risen by more than 21 percentage points, from 66.23% in 2021 to 87.32% today. According to CSSPS data, this shift has meaningfully reduced the share of candidates forced onto the manual fallback route.
With self-placement registration still ongoing beyond the 10th September count used in this report, the final 2026 figure — and the small residual balance still to be accounted for — will likely shift slightly before the cycle is fully closed out.
