Ghanaian champions file protest with WAFU Zone B and CAF, insisting extra time should have been played before penalties
Ghana Women’s Premier League champions, Ampem Darkoa Ladies, have filed a protest with WAFU Zone B and CAF following their Women’s Champions League qualification final defeat to Edo Queens.
The club is seeking a replay or continuation of the final against the Nigerian side after the match went straight to a penalty shootout instead of extra time following a 2-2 draw after 90 minutes.
According to the club, the regulations of the WAFU Zone B tournament were explained to all participating teams at the Management Committee Meeting, which stated that there would be extra time of 2 x 15 minutes if the game ended level or in a draw in regular time.
Ampem Darkoa Ladies say they had four substitutes ready to come on for the extra time period, only to be told the match would proceed to a penalty shootout — a move they describe as being against the express written provisions of the CAF Women’s Champions League Regulations.
The Ghanaian side lost the shootout 4-1, handing Edo Queens the trophy and a slot to play at the CAF Women’s Champions League.
In their protest, Ampem Darkoa Ladies are seeking either a replay of the extra time or the continuation of the game.
The club expressed gratitude to the Ghana Football Association for its support, adding that they are patiently awaiting the verdict from the CAF and WAFU Zone B Secretariats.
Below is the full statement released by the club on Friday, September 11, 2026:
