The red, gold, and green ntorowa have a secondary function: they are used by the Asantehene as rattles during ceremonial dances.
During funerary and remembrance rites, the Asantehene dances Kete with the Ntoa Kɔkɔɔ (the rattle covered in red felt). Depending on the occasion, he may also accompany the Kete orchestra with the red rattle before beginning his dance.
The Ahaban Mono Ntoa (the rattle covered in green felt) is used by the Asantehene when dancing Kete with Ahenyerenom (the King’s wives) at Hia, a section of the palace, during Mmaadae, the Adae ceremony observed by the women of the Royal Household. This takes place in the evening after the main Akwasidae ceremony.
The Asantehene uses the Akokɔ Sradɛ Ntorowa (the rattle covered in yellow felt) on celebratory occasions, including Akwasidaekeseɛ (Grand Adae) and state ceremonies held to receive dignitaries from abroad.
